"Lutherie" is the art of building or repairing string musical instruments. The historical capital city of lutherie is Cremona in North Italy: the most famous violin makers in the world (Nicolò Amati, Antonio Stradivari etc.) were born in this city.
In South Italy, the art of lutherie was not widespread, but since the second half of 18th century, travelers and migrants coming mainly from North Italy brought in their villages new musical instruments including some particular kind of guitars. Slowly somebody became interested and began to build a few rudimental copies of this instrument, sometimes also changing the original shape. That's how lutherie was born in South Italy and essentially it was based on the building of the so-called chitarra battente: it was a special musical instrument that first appeared in Sicily and Calabria, then finally in the Cilento area and Apulia.
